Many of the earliest creation myths are associated with the voice. For primitive man, lightning, thunder, sacrifice and dualism are recognised as the beginning of all things.
When the gods wandered on the earth they sang and drummed - that is lightened and thundered - creating all things in a sacrificial dance.
In many cultures these gods are only sounds or vibrating objects, conceived in the forms of human beings or animals. Created things are often believed to have emerged from the gods' bodies, especially as sound from their mouths. This image of creation released from the caverns of divine bodies mirrors that of sound released from a drum, or thunder from a thunder-cloud.
